A wee little journal about doing a remix of the red paintings single: We Belong In The Sea. |

I like the mobile phone on the table. Hey so i'm doing a remix of a track I produced for the Red Paintings last year for their EP. It's also been their main single for their current tour of Australia and the States and the first thing related since I finished the Revolution's Never Coming album.
With this remix, I wanted to create an in tact story line of the original song, but take it a bit further into the world of deep contrast. The song plays back under the new remix material as a whole, with some new eq and reverb to create an underwater distance to it. It also helps to create that illusive sound texture, that we so often identify as memory's or after thoughts.
I thought this song came up very well originally so didn't want to do the usual snip snap big beat remix styling on it and cheapen it. In other words, dance if you wish, but I won't be throwing streamers at you any time soon. Am, what I am aiming to do, is to capture 20 small sounds from the original recordings, and via the use of pitch and time stretching, i'm going to create my beats, harmonies etc all out of that material. This way, no foreign matter will enter the session file. I'm aiming visually to create a very contrasted track. One that see's an unraveling force of destruction gathering pace alongside the gentle flow of the natural song. The end will then take on the original approach of storyline turning into chaos, but i'll probably take it a wee bit further. It is a remix you know, I'm allowed too, yippy do da!
